Why Do Smart People Say "Um"?
Filler words (technically known as "Disfluencies") are not a sign of low intelligence. In fact, they often signal that your brain is working too fast for your mouth.
When you are searching for a complex word or idea, your brain inserts a "cognitive placeholder" like "um," "ah," or "like." This signals to the listener: "I am not done talking yet; please don't interrupt."
However, while natural in casual chat, excessive fillers in professional settings (interviews, pitches) act as static interference. They dilute your authority and make you appear unsure of your own message.
The "Cluster" Phenomenon
Most speakers have a specific "crutch word" they rely on when nervous. Identifying yours is the first step.
- The Hesitator: "Um," "Uh," "Er." (Signals: I'm thinking).
- The Hedger: "Sort of," "Kind of," "Basically." (Signals: I'm not confident).
- The Bridger: "So," "And," "You know." (Signals: I'm afraid of silence).
The Cost of "Like" and "Basically"
See the difference? The information is identical, but the perception of the speaker changes dramatically. Fillers turn statements into questions.
| With Fillers (Low Authority) | Clean Speech (High Authority) |
|---|---|
| "So, um, basically our revenue is up." | "Our revenue increased." |
| "I think we sort of need to pivot, you know?" | "We need to pivot." |
| "And, uh, honestly, it's really good." | "The results are excellent." |
Embracing the "Micro-Pause"
The antidote to filler words is not faster thinking—it is Silence. When you feel an "Um" coming, simply close your mouth.
The Concept
To you, the silence feels like an eternity. To the listener, it feels like confidence, thoughtfulness, and control.
The Drill
Use this tool to record yourself speaking for 60 seconds about your day. Your goal isn't to be perfect, but to catch yourself before the filler word escapes.
